SMALL ADJUSTMENTS TO SAVE WATER IN TIMES OF QUARANTINE
ABOUT
SOCIAL PRACTICE 2 NEW EARTH

This web page shows the outcomes of research done by Emilie Montfoort on the topic of saving water during quarantined times during the ongoing covid-19 pandemic.

WHAT

The goal of this project is to make people aware of small applicable adjustments that can be made in daily life in order to reduce the use of fresh water in and around the house.

The illustrations are used as a reminder for people to implement sustainability in their everyday life, even in current crisis times. A reminder of individual capability to make a change.

WHY

As there's an ongoing global pandemic taking place, people are quarantined at home in many areas around the world. This has the effect of an increase in fresh water use.

Compared to last year, there has been an increase of 7% for the use of drinking water in the Netherlands. This could from a threat for future draught as fresh water scarcity is increasing on a global level.

Some of the biggest reasons for this growing problem are the increasing world population, improving living standards and expansion of agriculture.

This project seemed to be a good opportunity for me to link current events to research about an already existing problem and combine these into something personal: illustrations.

ABOUT
HOW

By presenting humoristic illustrations of some obivous, some less obvious daily dilemmas I'm hoping to encourage people to adjust their water using habits in a straightforward and simple way.

By doing this hopefully creating some awareness for this approaching clean water shortage and remind people how easily their habits can be adapted in order to make a change.

FUTURE

If I had 10 more weeks to work on this project I would turn these illustrations into actual posters (with a link to this web page on it) and spread them in places around the city where they would gain the most attention. I would also broaden my research to see what changes can be made once we are no longer advised to live in quarantine.
